Oxford City Royal Regatta

September 11th, 2009

LCBC successfully entered a men’s coxed four into both days of the Oxford City Royal Regatta this August. Raced on the Isis this is a sideby side regatta with crews coming from as far as Wales. On the Saturday a crew of Janette Mill, John Dudding, Ed Heywood-Lonsdale, Stuart Jones and Charlie Podschies reached the final of the novice division but their bowman, being too strong for his rigger, broke it and thus suffered an ‘easily’ defeat. However, on the Sunday – a 500m sprint event – Jonathan Lancaster replaced Charlie at bow and Lincoln comfortably beat a Reading RC crew in the final’s second running: the race being re-run as a result of some aggressive Reading coxing first time around. The crew won themselves a pewter tankard and a first ARA point but disappointngly failed to celebrate this ‘de-novicing’ in the traditional manner of  jumping in the river.

Eights Roundup

August 26th, 2009

LCBC had a really exciting eights. 6 crews qualified, and we finished as the fifth best boat club on the river.

Women:

W1 rowed beautifully over the first two days with an inexperienced crew, but unfortunately hit the bank on Friday, leading to a bump that was followed by another on Saturday. W2 were one of the fastest crews in their division, and showed this by bumping on the first two days. Unfortunately a bizarre concession on Friday meant they had to row over, and this affected their confidence, leading to an unlucky crab led to them being bumped on the final day.

Men:

Lincoln’s men had an incredible eights, finishing with the third most bumps out of the men’s boat clubs. The first eight was much faster than the first torpid. The ineffectual Alex Bostrom was replaced at stroke by Bodo Schulenburg, and his experience was allied with the physical and emotional power of Peter Gee at 7 to form a solid stern pair. Doug Bruce’s return from Isis brought power at 6, and then there were some other people.

M1 were dominant over the first two days, bumping St. Anne’s and Brasenose before the gut. Unfortunately, they failed to catch Jesus on Friday or Saturday.
They were within half a boat length for most of the race on Friday, and were a metre away and closing as they were klaxoned on Saturday. (The cause of the klaxon can be seen here)

M2 rowed far too quickly for their division, and bumped out before Donington Bridge or just after on three of the four days. However, they ended with only three bumps as Queens II were so incredibly slow that they were bumped by Merton II as Lincoln were a metre away.

M3 were also too fast for their division, and ended with two bumps. An early start gun caused their last race to be called off, as well as sending Jesus M4s Bowman to hospital.

M4 had the same early start gun problem, after the first three days had left them on par. A row over on day 1 was followed by being bumped and then bumping Worcester M4. They caused excitement however by staging an impromptu 4 way side by side race with Hall, Hildas and Worcester, leading to Ben Ramsden’s coxing license being revoked.
